Country Guide - Spain
Spanish property has long been a firm favourite amongst second home, holiday and retirement home buyers.
Spain's fantastic climate, spectacular scenery, golf courses galore and an excellent transport and social infrastructure all serve to make it such a popular overseas property destination.
Add to this a low cost of living and a fascinating culture and it’s not surprising why people keep buying property in Spain. Major Spanish holiday home hotspots are located on the Spanish Costas, the Canaries and the Balearics.
These remain popular choices for holiday home buyers and retirees not looking to make high capital returns in the short term; however, an emerging sense of adventure is driving many Spanish property buyers’ interest further inland, creating new mini-emerging markets in easily accessible rural locations.
The vast landmass of Spain provides a varied countryside ranging from a cooler, wetter climate in the North to an almost Saharan hot, dry climate in the South: a country of contrasts which truly offers “something for everyone”. When His Majesty Juan Carlos l succeeded Franco in 1975 he started the country on the path to economic stability and opened the way to substantial growth after years of domination by the dictatorship, most notably in the real estate market which is always the most accessible economic sector.
This was quickly understood by the Spanish who ensured that a complete real estate market was available providing the full range of property for sale, off-plan property, investment property, holiday homes and property for rent.
Successive governments have undertaken reforms to enable the Spanish economy to adopt a competitive entrepreneurial stance. Spain is now one of the leading markets in Europe and much of its thriving economy is related to the exciting real estate market fueled by the interest of foreign holiday homes and retirement property buyers.
